The Prey

Chodím v tomhle semestru na angličtinu. Většinou rozebíráme články z New Scientistu.

So this was the first day of my fighting with the poachers. It was dramatic. I met real poachers and started to doubt my mission here in Gabon. After the first night in the new tent I woke up at half past four in the morning. I got dressed and went out to the camp. The cool African morning was full of sounds. I’m a zoology student but I failed to recognize most of them.

“Wanna cup of coffee?” I heard.

I turned to the voice. I saw Hjalmar. He stood beside a field kitchen with a pot in his hands.

“Sure,” I responded.

He gave me a mug of coffee. It was hot and strong.

“We’re going to count chimp nests in an hour. They are in the forest two hours’ drive from the camp. Wanna join?

“Sure,” I sad again.

I was high-strung. Maybe we’ll find some traces of poachers.

Our expediton had three jeeps. One was driven by Hjalmar and contained white man. In the other two were tribal rangers. They were armed and spoke Swahili. They were smiling and look amiably.

I was looking at the plains that run along the jeep. I saw a herd of giraffes, then one rhinoceros and one herd of kudu. They were exquisite. I had the feeling that the grass next to the kudu herd was moving. I was curious what it is, but before I could ask Hjalmar, he said:

“The poachers.”

Our jeep stopped but the rangers went ahead. They turned to the grass and drove in it. I heard a sound of a clash and saw some tribesman running out of the grass. They were slim and poorly dressed. The ranger’s jeeps were chasing them. Its hood was covered with blood. After that I heard sound of Kalashnikov. The bodies of tribesman crumbled like roses on the shooting-range.

It didn’t take even five minutes. All the poachers were dead.

“Ok,” said Hjalmar. “This is not our business. Let’s go count the nests.”

Then he cranked up.

[6] To by měla. Jazyky jsou vůbec nejdůležitější a nejužitečnější odrůda vědění. Škoda, že mně to došlo dost pozdě.
